匠心獨具前衛創新, Iris Van Herpen Blurs the Lines between Art and Design

Iris van Herpen is transcending boundaries within the industry by liberating our sense of limitations, the maison is known for binding emerging technologies like elaborate 3-D printing or laser-cutting with delicate handwork such as embroidering or draping, creating a hybrid of Haute Couture. ‘Craftolution’, coined as the evolution of craftsmanship and the embracement of change form the core of the brand’s identity, fusing layered lightness, three-dimensionality, and undulating volume into ethereal creations

The immaculate creations extend their reach at exhibitions in world-leading museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Victoria & Albert Museum in London and Palais de Tokyo in Paris

With its sculptural and architectural nature, Van Herpen's designs are exhibited in various museums, including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Royal Museum in Toronto and the Groninger Museum.

Van Herpen's scientific inclination has also led to collaborations with CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 2011, Van Herpen's 3D printed garments were included in Time Magazine's list of 50 Best Inventions of that year, while she was also awarded the ANDAM Gran Prix Award in 2014, The European Commission's 2016 STARTS Prize, and the Dutch state prize for the arts, the Johanness Vermeer Award in 2017.

I realized I had ideas that I couldn’t really produce by hand, and I saw that architects in Amsterdam and the Netherlands were working with 3D printers. I was really taken by how precise they were, and how much potential there was to produce clothes.

So I started working with an architect because I didn’t have the experience, and had no idea how to create files for the printers to work from. That was definitely when I realized the potential of combining that kind of technology with fashion.

Entangled Life, a book by Merlin Sheldrake about how fungi sustain life on Earth, inspired Van Herpen’s collection on many levels. Her use of pleating can be related back to the gills of mushrooms.

Mycelium, the lace-like branching part of fungus, influenced both silhouettes and embellishments. Mycelium, the designer explains, forms a “wood wide web,” or underground system of communication. It’s an idea that “especially touched me,” she said.

There are little black beads,…
There are little black beads, like seeds, in it; they are obviously the beginning of the growth, then there are transparent stems that grow into sort of black branches, and they ultimately grow into the transparent leaves that are very fragile and create a quite sculptural volume.

The core and the beadwork [represent] growth, [which itself contains the idea] of strong, feminine empowerment.
