Named The Muraka (which translates to "coral" in the local language, Dhivehi), the villa is a two-level structure, with the living area above water, and the main bedroom underwater. If you've ever wanted to live The Little Mermaid in real life, now's your chance.

The hotel has marine biologists on staff to ensure that the sunken villa has minimal impact on the surrounding coral.

The entire lower suite was built on land in Singapore, fittingly made of acrylic from Japan’s premiere aquarium manufacturer Nippura Co., and sealed with Shin Etsu Marine sealant. It was then submerged into the ocean and held firmly in place by 10 concrete piles that ensure it will not move or shift due to a high tide or rough seas.

Yuji Yamazaki, which was responsible for designing all the interiors across The Muraka, chose a dark and moody aesthetic for the the room, including plenty of leather and carpet floors.

A dark curtain was also custom-made to enable complete black-out – a feature that Saleem described as one of the most challenging aspects of the project. The team also included a fire escape, which acts as a marker of the room above water, and a panic button that triggers a signal at the main resort.

---- MY MODERN MET

Outside of the suite, the 430-meter family pool and recreation area features the sand-floored Rangali bar serving up lunch, dinner, and cocktails, as well as regular live music and events. Alternatively, The Quiet Zone infinity pool faces out over the lagoon and includes an open-air tented lounge on the beach accompanied by a bar offering both food and drinks throughout the day. Specifically for adults, this quieter area offers day-beds and music from morning until late evening.
