The Opéra national de Paris will present its Opening Gala of the dance season in the heart of the Palais Garnier, the public can watch the program on chezsoi.operadeparis.fr

Sponsored by Chanel and Rolex, this unique event marks the return of the dancers of the Opéra de Paris Ballet on scene at the Palais Garnier, after months of interruption. The magnificent Ballet Défilé, presenting the Paris Opera dancers from the petits rats up to the Etoiles, will open the 6th edition of the Opening Gala. Gathering the works of three different choreographers, this evening will present a blend of classicism and modernity. They will present the “Défilé du Ballet” then will interpret the magnificent pas de deux “Grand pas classique” by Victor Gsovsky, dressed in Chanel costumes, then will follow with The vertiginous thrill of exactitude by William Forsythe and In the night by Jerome Robbins

The ballerinas just kept coming and coming, spilling out in rows from the rear of the stage, all in white tutus and surgical face masks, walking gracefully in perfect unison. This mesmerizing spectacle climaxed with almost 250 dancers assembled. While the lack of gasps and applause was disquieting, even eerie, the performances were breathtaking, particularly the opening pas de deux danced by etoiles Hugo Marchand and Valentine Colasante, both in midnight blue Chanel costumes flecked with crystals and stars.

Next came a new production for the Paris Opera Ballet for which new costumes from the house of Chanel were debuted. The dance, Grand Pas Classique, is one of choreographer Victor Gsovsky's most well-known. Its movements are stripped down to reveal the extent of a ballerina’s capabilities, and there’s an exactitude that lends itself brilliantly to the showcase of fashion—a midnight velvet blue leotard and a tutu embellished by Maison Lesage with a dazzle of stars and constellations.

Next came what was described in the program as a production with an avalanche of fouettés and pirouettes—The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude by William Forsythe. It’s a piece with five dancers, three of whom wear modern takes on a tutu that have all the bounce of a trampoline in a color akin to chartreuse.

The evening, which marked the return of the dancers to the Garnier stage after months away, opened as always with the famous Paris défilé, even if the modern petits rats are all masked. On and on they come, the stately walk a prelude to learning the drill, placing and discipline of the corps. The adults follow, acknowledging the unseen viewers with their reverences.

Ballet plus Chanel seems like a match made in heaven, and thanks to the Paris Opera Ballet gala, that pairing came to life last Wednesday evening. The program began with the entirety of the company’s troupe and students from the Paris Opera’s ballet school performing the traditional “Défilé du Ballet,” also known as the Ballet Parade. Each ballerina proudly sported a blue face mask to create a pretty remarkable, and incredibly 2021, image.
