Exclusive experience of Palace of Versailles, as it has opened first-ever on-ground hotel, Le Grand Controle to the public

France’s Palace of Versailles has opened its first-ever on-ground hotel, Le Grand Controle to the public. Guests of Airelles Château de Versailles enjoy a number of exclusive experiences. Each morning, before the arrival of the general public, hotel guests are invited to join a tour of The Trianon and The Queen’s Hamlet (Le Hameau de la Reine); including Marie Antoinette’s English Gardens and Louis XIV’s Grand Trianon. Once all visitors have departed, hotel guests can enjoy an intimate tour of the Palace itself, taking in the King and Queen’s State Apartments, the Hall of Mirrors, and previously unseen living areas of the sovereigns. There is also a selection of additional experiences available, such as a private performance at the Royal Opera, private dining with a string quartet in the former apartment of Louis XV’s daughters, and the chance to follow in the footsteps of a former head gardener to the royals, André Le Nôtre

It began life as a modest hunting lodge built by Louis XIII in 1623, but under the ownership of Louis XIV, Versailles became a magnificent palace renowned throughout the world. Over the course of more than 100 years, and during numerous successions to the throne, the building was embellished and enlarged to accommodate the court of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI. Now considered one of the finest achievements of French art, the Palace of Versailles remains a cultural symbol of royal splendour.

Built in 1681 as a ducal residence, it’s an extension of the south wing of the palace; it has direct access to the Orangerie, and for most of the 18th century it housed France’s ministry of finance. Rarely does a hotel company set itself the mission Airelles has: not merely to renovate a historic edifice but to reconstitute it so meticulously that, as Christophe Tollemer, the project’s architect and designer, put it, “the 21st century would disappear—except for its comforts.”

But the pièce de résistance is tours and events for hotel guests only. Before and after hours, especially, you will feel that Versailles’s 2,000 acres of garden and three palaces are your private stomping ground. “This place elicits an extraordinary aesthetic emotion,” said a Versailles official back in 2011. “It will be the first time in centuries that people can sleep in this environment without being courtiers.”

Decorated individually in an 18th-century style, the rooms have authentic fabrics, chandeliers, artwork and artifacts, including a love letter from Madame De Staël to her lover Louis, Comte de Narbonne-Lara. The property is largely furnished with original period furniture and Tollemer worked closely with Emmanuelle Vidal-Delagneau, a specialist in French heritage and art, in the selection of authentic art and objects from the 17th and 18th centuries.

To keep with the theme, all of the rooms and suites have been named after prominent figures who hold a strong attachment with the property. Some perhaps less known names include Jacques Necker, the director general of finance under Louis XVI, Madame de Fouquet, a celebrated socialite who married Marquis de Fouquet, a hero of the American Revolutionary War and Madame de Staël, a famous novelist, essayist, philosopher and a close confidant of Marie-Antoinette.

French luxury hotel brand Airelles is opening its sixth property, Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle, which is one of the year's most anticipated luxury hotel openings and sure to become the brand's crown jewel. But while this property offers many of the standard amenities we've come to expect from a five-star accommodation—a culinary program from a celebrated chef Alain Ducasse, a fabulous spa with Valmont—this hotel offers experiences, accommodations, and views like no one else.
