Originally,” Harlan said recently, “my idea was to find something to serve as wine education for Meadowood,” the Napa Valley resort he founded in 1979. That idea grew into the purchase of a 5,000-plus acre property in the Pope Valley section of Napa which Harlan planned to subdivide into 43 parcels surrounding a mother vineyard where homeowners could build their own wineries. “Sort of the same idea as a golf club with homes,” he said, “but a wine club with vineyards.

Members can acquire it in amounts ranging from six to 75 cases. About half of the customers make their own labels for these master wines, while others go a step further, concocting their own individual cuvées—with the guidance of experts—from the same lots used by Gressi and Levy. Members who want to have hands-on experience with pruning and harvesting also have that opportunity.

Though wine clubs have become common in many American cities and suburbs, the 80-acre Reserve is in a league all its own. Its grapes come from root stocks and clones on Harlan Estate, and its 244 members can cook with the author Patricia Wells, and confer with the superstar Bordeaux oenologist Michel Rolland. A resident wine historian quotes Thucydides and other ancient Greeks.

While the residency was planned well before the Glass Fire, our time in Ojai will serve as an opportunity for the TRAM team to continue to cook and work together.
