Stories

Who said the pleasures of win…
Who said the pleasures of wine and running were incompatible? Created in 1985 by a group of marathon-running friends and managed ever since by a team of volunteers, this extraordinary 42,195 km race takes place every September, when around 8,000 entrants come to sample the joys of sport as well as the finest regional specialities.
Few marathons are in a class …
Few marathons are in a class of their own. Routed through 59 vineyards in the fabled villages of the Medoc region, this event appeals to the true connoisseur of fine runs. The course reads more like a wine list than a race course: Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Lynch-Bages, Pichon Lonqueville, and Beychevelles among others. Don’t be surprised when you are asked at the aid stations, "red or white?" Of course, water is provided as well. In addition, most runners dressed in costume!

Running the world’s longest, booziest, race. Is a full marathon with 23 wine stops also offering specialities such as oysters, steak, and ice-cream a recipe for success – or disaster?

“Year after year, the Marathon du Médoc proves you can be healthy and safe while appreciating fine food, wine and our beautiful region. It isn’t about getting a good time – it’s about having a good time.”
Registration for this year’s …
Registration for this year’s event has closed. Check the website for next year’s date (entries usually open in February or March). The race starts and finishes in Pauillac, near Bordeaux. Despite the obvious dangers of combining extreme physical exercise and lashings of booze, organisers of the event – which began in 1984 – claim to take safety very seriously, with more medical personnel on hand than any other marathon. As for outfits, each year has a different theme.
