Sustainable development goals, hotel guests reconnect through nature and minimalism, giving more than what we take

Design spaces hidden in nature. Art and nature can have a deep impact in our well-being. We strengthen that connection by creating spaces that integrate them. Hinter is no traditional hotel, instead of traditional rooms, we look for different destinations where guests can reconnect through nature and minimalism. We want to set a new norm on sustainability by giving more than what we take

We are not interested in being carbon neutral, we simply want to give more than what we take, because that is the way contemporary businesses should think. For every booking, for every piece of furniture we sell, we will plant ten trees via our one tree planted partnership. when we say we love nature, we mean it

Architecture studio Ménard Dworkind has designed a slender cedar-clad holiday home with a matching sauna on a forested hillside in Quebec. The Hinterhouse cabin and sauna are clad in white cedar board, which Ménard Dworkind chose so it will weather over time and blend in with its natural setting. The cedar is also used for the house's shutters that slide across windows to provide views of the Mont-Tremblant valley.

Striving to give back, the hintercompany plants 10 trees for every booking. This compact house fits two bedrooms, one bathroom and an open-plan living space into 930 square feet. The living space, flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides, is organized around a central wood stove that rotates 360°, providing relaxing views of the fire from every angle.

The skin and bones of the house were built almost entirely out of sustainably-forested native wood. The house’s exterior is wrapped in 2-1/2” custom-milled white cedar boards, a low-maintenance choice that will ensure hinterhouse ages graciously while blending with the surrounding forest.

‘We started to think not only of the sustainability side of building, but as a business model; how do you implement something that really gives back and gives back hard? I’m a big believer that carbon neutrality is not enough at all.’

This is why, every time somebody stays at Hinterhouse, they plant trees in collaboration with the non-profit, One Tree Planted. At the end of the year, that’s around 1500 trees. Way more than the house will ever need – a house takes around 60 trees or 70 trees to be built.
