New spatial architecture, live and work together, influence each other, La Biennale di Venezia 2021

The 17th International Architecture Exhibition runs from 22 May to 21 November 2021, curated by architect and scholar Hashim Sarkis. “We need a new spatial contract. In the context of widening political divides and growing economic inequalities, we call on architects to imagine spaces in which we can generously live together”

The Taiwan Collateral Event ‘Primitive Migration from/to Taiwan’ tackles the question posed by the biennale’s curator Hashim Sarkis with three sub-themes – “Ask”, “Work Together”, and “Influence Each Other”. According to curator Hashim Sarkis, “together” includes human connections and our ties with nature. Although it is an architecture exhibition, this year’s Biennale boasts just a few buildings and purely architectural projects. Instead, the focus is on relationships rather than structures. And very often, nature is presented as a masterful architect that creates the strongest, most evocative relationship.

Achim Menges and Jan Knippers drew some inspiration from spiderwebs and beaver dams for their striking “Material Culture: Rethinking the Physical Substrate for Living Together,” which rethinks load-bearing structures made from fiber composites—namely carbon and glass fiber. The prototype on display aligns with the United Nations’ request for new building methods focusing on saving water, lowering costs while being durable and high resistance.

At this year’s venice architecture biennale, visitors will be able to take a first look at tropicalia — what is set to be the world’s largest tropical greenhouse under a single dome. presented by zuecca projects, the exhibition will display architectural models, drawings, sketches and videos of the proposed greenhouse.

The huge domed structure is designed to integrate with its environment by the absence of internal load-bearing columns. A double dome design is conceived to provide optimal thermal isolation while the entire building is developed to be energy self-sufficient; all the heat produced by the greenhouse’s effect will be recycled and stocked, and the surplus energy will be exported via a heat network into buildings and surrounding businesses. Set to be constructed in 2024 on the côte d’opale in northern france.

Copenhagen-based studio EFFEKT has presented plans for a residential project ‘naturbyen’, a name that translates as ‘nature village’, the project will see a field in denmark transformed into a completely new forest-neighborhood district. The development seeks to demonstrate how sustainable housing development can be combined with ambitious afforestation, increased biodiversity, and circular resource thinking and responding to denmark’s goal of covering 20% of its landmass with forest by 2100.

Grancey-le-château, a world at the edge with patrick berger’s birds’ pavilion presented at the 17th international architecture exhibition – la biennale di venezia. It's an original installation conceived as the preview for an ever-evolving ethological architectural site that is the only one of its kind in the world.

"The Infinite House", a project inspired by traditional Argentine houses. The project reflects on the identity of Argentine public housing and the role collective housing, both public and private, has played in the country's history and society. The Infinite House aims to push the limits of the domestic and to highlight the importance of the collective rather than the individual by illustrating that a home extends beyond one's own living space: "it is the city, the country, and even the world."

Bit.Bio.Bot installation is part exhibition, part science experiment and encourages viewers to taste freshly harvested algae. Through photosynthesis, domestic cultures of microalgae can turn pollution into food, clean water and even help purify air. Walls are “insulated” with algae. “If we—collectively, daily and locally—contribute to transforming air pollutants and water contaminants into highly nutritious aliments, there will be fewer opportunities for unbalanced viral ecologies to cause us harm.”

Primitive Migration from/to Taiwan draws from existing case studies and interdisciplinary collaborations that elicit in-depth discussions around constructing pioneering, environmentally friendly buildings to present an exemplary model for future experimental architecture. The three sub-themes of the Taiwanese presentation – Ask, Work Together, and Influence Each Other – foregrounds the unique relationship between humans and nature. These sub-themes will be unveiled through five architectural projects.

本屆臺灣館參展團隊—自然洋行一直以來的建築概念，即著重人與環境的共存，建構如何和建築以外的事物和諧運作，而非創作一個人與自然或環境隔絕的空間。也正因為這樣的思考，在本屆五個展出的參展建築項目，透過在地風土環境--臺灣--所啟發和衍伸的自然靈感。策展人曾志偉在訪談中曾談到在田野學習時的啟發和經驗：人類在自然的野地，如何透過本能的感覺啟動應對能力，克服自然給予的挑戰，當我們正視人類內在的原始感知並逐漸產生正向對應能力時，恐懼也就會消失了。本屆展覽命題與建築概念也從此而生。
