The chalet may be new, but the family’s history on this land goes back some six decades: Don Sheldon claimed this spot in the 1950s. He was not only a well-known pilot, but also a surveyor who, together with the founder of the Boston Museum of Science, Bradford Washburn, mapped this area. He subsequently was able to claim the acreage under the Homestead Act. The law required him to operate it as a commercial enterprise, so he built a mountain house for backcountry enthusiasts passing through.

The two-story Sheldon Chalet and its five-acre plot are an enclave within the confines of Denali National Park, offering unbeatable views of the namesake mountain that no other accommodation can. “We get guests into places where you once could only go if you were an experienced mountaineer willing to risk your life,” says Sheldon. “This is an experience like no other.”

During aurora season, from mid-September through early March, days are spent “flightseeing” around the national park, snowshoeing, ski touring, and visiting remote hot springs. (You can also build an igloo.) During “Adventure Season,” from early March through mid-July, additional thrills include rappelling, glacier trekking, visiting a Mastodon bone yard, and fishing.

The journey to the Sheldon Chalet is an adventure in itself. The gateway town of Talkeetna, Alaska (population: 870) already feels remote to an urbanite like me, with its log cabins and dense forests. We flew low over forests and rivers, until, suddenly, the trees were gone and the craggy landscape began to resemble another planet altogether. We flew closer, and snowy peaks rose up on either side of us, the snow below dotted with ice-blue glacial water pools.

To get beyond the walls of the chalet, its team can arrange helicopter excursions to remote hot springs, fishing spots, and berry bushes ripe for picking. But it’s a tremendous adventure to simply walk out onto the glacier itself. I soon found myself strapped to snowshoes, roped up with a mountain guide blazing the trail, out on an endless expanse of snow. My nearest companion, 50 feet ahead, appeared a tiny figure against the vast panoramas; the figures ahead of him were no more than dots.

Either way, evenings can include warm-ups in the rooftop sauna, stargazing sessions, and elegant meals by Alaskan chef Dave Thorne, who used to cook for Justin Timberlake, Keith Urban, and Kings of Leon when they were on tour. (Dishes such as barbecued Alaskan oysters with roasted poblano and pepita chutney are more often paired with Anchorage Brewing Co. beers than with big California reds.)
